I wrote the following entry a few days ago, but didn’t have the chance to post it to the blog. It’s late, but it’s here, and I still think it’s important. Also, I doesn’t give me something to be enthusiastic about.
I’ve been waiting all my life for someone of political prominence to say NASA should direct their efforts toward putting a Man on Mars.
John McCain has finally said something I can be enthusiastic about:
"I am intrigued by a man on Mars and I think that it would excite the imagination of the American people if we can say, 'Hey, here's what it looks like," he said.
"We know that now, and here's what may be there and let's all join in that project. I think Americans would be very willing to do that."
Space travel and the colonization of another planet are about hope and real change that can be seen and touched, and not just words on a sign waved in front of a camera Yes, I think Americans are willing.
For me, space has always been the direction, and the 60s Generation has disappointed me and many others intrigued with the possibility of a trip to Mars. Simple fact is, we should be there already. But we must keep in mind the generation which has ‘run’ things.
That generation has been too self-involved—nosey and really not driven to accomplish much. Technology-wise so much is owned to the Apollo program which the Baby-Boom generation has had nothing to do with. The whole group is living off the fat of the land, the work of a different generation, and has given nothing to its children except guilt and fear and self-loathing.
Space may be the only way to get away from them!

Great post, William!
I, too, am a big enthusiast for exploring/colonizing space. If Mankind is not to stagnate, not to degenerate as we wallow in our narcissistic puss, we MUST head outward, must settle the many frontiers of space. We have the Moon, Mars, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan, Tritan, Pluto, Svedna, and a whole host of Kuiper belt objects, moonlets, and asteroids waiting for us. The solar system alone will keep us busy for thousands of years. Eventually who knows what we can do? Terraform Mars or the Galilean satellites? Maybe even give the Moon an atmosphere, and get rid of 99% of the Venusian? We have a bright future if we go; no future if we stay here.
Getting away from THEM would be a delight!
